Thomas’s Guitar Super Song!

We have so many talented students! At a certain point in the learning process it is very important that we encourage our students to be creative with what they are learning. So, I always them to write a song (I guide them of course, but the work is fundamentally their own creation!). The latest tune comes from Thomas, who has only been playing 18 months or so, and has written this rock odyssey! He absorbed so much information from learning tracks like ‘sweet Child O’ Mine’ and various other rock hits, that he was able to funnel that knowledge into writing his own rock song.

He has great awareness of timing, a great touch on his lead playing, and puts together a beautiful solo at the end of the track! Please listen to be blown away by what this 13 year old boy has achieved!

Lucas jamming a Slash solo!

Here is one of my younger students – Lucas. We have recently been learning barre chords and major/minor scale shapes and applying some of these ideas to learning the song ‘Sweet Child O Mine’. We have just been through the first solo of the track and I have been showing Lucas how to see that solo as part of the scale shape. he totally got it, and was easily able to move it into a different key and play the solo over a totally new rhythm… amazing! The video is a sneaky peek that I just managed to film towards the end of our improvising session. He will be a great player some day!

This is a good lesson to you all as well – If you learn a solo, don’t just learn it parrot fashion! Learn how it applies to your scale shapes in which particular key, then you will be able to reuse the solo and licks from the solo in your own improvising. If you have no idea how to do this, you need to get in touch and we’ll show you! :)

Legato Lesson and Layla!

In this lesson I will take you through the extremely common legato technique. This is simply the process of using hammer ons and pull offs to create a smooth sound. I will be showing you an exercise as well as a famous Clapton guitar riff to get you started with the technique. Good luck :)

Blues Masterclass student Chris Kew – Playing the Blues!

Here’s Chris, one of my students who is taking the blues masterclass! Over the past couple of months we have been looking into all aspects of blues soloing and playing over a 12 bar. I asked Chris to put together a 12 bar solo for me based on some of the B.B.King and Freddie King ideas we have been looking at. Well, here is the result! Well impressed with the overall tone, phrasing and sound Chris is getting! It’ll only get better from here :)
